The photograph depicts customers and employees standing outside the building, including William Alexander Lee. The words, "Seattle before the fire" are written on the verso, referring to the Seattle fire of 6 June 1889. This photograph was collected by George Hewit Lee, a minister who lived in Portland and Corvallis, Or. and Seattle, Wash. with his family, among other places; William Alexander Lee was his brother and was co-proprietor of the grocery.
